Grenada was formed in 1836, after federal removal of the Choctaw people. Cotton was the major commodity crop, dependent on the labor of enslaved African Americans. In 1885 two white men, Perry McChristian and Felix Williams, were accused of murdering two white peddlers and were lynched by a mob of white men. In 1966, James Meredith started a solo March Against Fear to challenge oppression in Mississippi. His planned route from Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi, passed through Grenada. In August of 1966, a federal judge ordered Grenada to allow African-American students to enroll in the previously all-white schools. White leaders used threats of eviction and firing to coerce Black parents to withdraw from school. A large mob of whites met them at the school and chased them away, pursuing them through the streets and beating the children with chains, pipes, and clubs. The mob repeated this for the first week of school, while local law enforcement did nothing. Federal protection for the children began on September 17, 1966 and 13 members of the mob were arrested. The church closed the college in 1936 and transferred its assets to Millsaps College. In the 20th century, it encountered financial troubles during the Great Depression. The city has a total area of 30.0 square miles (78.2 square miles), of which 30% is land and 0% is water. The population was 13,092 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grenada County.
History
Grenada was formed in 1836 by the union of the two adjacent towns of Pittsburg and Tuloma. In 1882, the school was taken over by the church and renamed as Grenada College. During the civil rights era, African Americans were active in seeking their constitutional rights. In 1966, a large mob of whites chased 250 black students out of school and beat them with chains, pipes, and clubs. The mob repeated this for the first week of school, and 13 members of the mob were arrested. In 1967, a federal judge ordered Grenada to allow African-American students to enroll in the previously all-white schools. It was reported later that summer that the town never entered the 1,000 new black voters on official rolls. The town of Grenada is now home to more than 2,000,000 people, including more than 100,000 Haitians, who live in and around the city of Port-au-Prince. It is also the home of the U.S. Air Force Base, which was built in the early 1900s on the site of a former sugar plantation. The base is still in use today, and is located on the coast of the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, about 100 miles south of the capital, Porto Alegre. The island is home to about 2,500 people, most of whom live in or near the town of Ponte della Vedra, on the Gulf of Mexico.
