Muskego is a city in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 24,135. There are three lakes within the city's boundaries. The name Muskego comes from the Potawatomi Indian name for the area, "Mus-kee-Guaac", meaning sunfish. The first permanent settlers, coming from New Hampshire, were the Luther Parker family. The city has become a bedroom community for Milwaukee. The Muske go Waterbugs perform a water ski show in front of Idle Isle Park each Wednesday evening throughout the summer. It was at some point home of the world's fastest roller coaster. The town is located in the Town of Norway and has a large Norwegian population. It is also home to the Wisconsin State Fair Park, which was founded in 1877 and is located on the Wisconsin Dells River. The state fair park is now part of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which is based in Milwaukee. It has been home to a number of world-famous amusement parks, including DandiLion Park, where the Tailspin roller coaster was once on display. The park was closed in 1974 after an 11-year-old boy fell from the Ferris wheel and died. The lake is fringed with cattail-dominated wetlands and encompasses numerous islands of cattails marsh. The remaining lakes are mostly developed with residential housing. A plan to drain the lakes was described as a nuisance drain, which were described as stagnant, stagnant, and a nuisance nuisance.

History

Once an agricultural area, Muskego was incorporated as a city in 1964. When it became a city it included the unincorporated communities of Tess Corners and Durham Hill. The park included rides, games of chance, and was a venue for musical bands. The first European came in 1827 and the Potawatomi tribe ceded their lands in Wisconsin to the United States government in 1833. In 1833, the first permanent settlers, coming from New Hampshire, were the Luther Parker family. The city was named "Mus-kee-Guaac", which means "sunfish" by the Potwatomi. It is now home to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which was founded in 1858. The town is also home to a number of colleges, including Marquette, Marquette University, and Marquette Medical School. It also has the University Of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, which opened its doors in 1876. The university is the oldest public college in the state, having been founded in 1788.

Geography

Muskego has three lakes within its borders. Big Muskego Lake is a shallow 2,260-acre (9.1 km²) flow-through lake. Lake Denoon is a 162-acre lake in the southwestern portion of the city and is also partially located in the Town of Norway, Wisconsin. A plan to drain the lakes, which were described as a stagnant nuisance, was proposed in 1854. The city has a total area of 35.98 square miles (93.19 km²), of which, 31.60 squaremile (81.84 km²] is land and 4.38 square mile (11.34km²) is water. The city is located in Wisconsin's Ozaukee County, which is home to many deer, elk, moose, and pronghorn deer. It is also home to the Wisconsin Dells, one of the largest concentrations of elk in the United States, as well as a large number of bald eagles and other North American eagles. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 2,715,000 (2,816,000 in 2010). The city's area of land is 31.6 square miles, or 93.2 km², with 31.2 square miles of water. The area of water is 11.34 km² (41.2 sq miles) with 4.4 square miles being land. It has a maximum depth of 65 feet (20 m).

Muskego is served by the Tess Corners Fire Department, a volunteer fire department. The first Mayor of the city was Jerome Gottfried, elected in 1964. He was followed by Donald Wieselmann, Wayne Salentine, David DeAngelis, Mark Slocomb, Charles Damaske, John Johnson, Kathy Chiaverotti and Rick Petfalski. Muskego has a population of 2,000. It is located in the northern part of the town. The city is located on the Hudson River, which runs through the center of town. It has an elevation of 1,200 feet (400 meters) and is located at the base of Mount Washington, which rises to 2,100 feet (600 meters) above sea level. The town's name is derived from the name of a Native American tribe, the Muskegos, who once lived in the area. It was named after the town's first settler, who arrived in the 17th century. The name of the current mayor is a descendent of the original settlers, who came in the 18th century and settled in the early 1800s. The current mayor has been in office since 1964, and was elected for a second term in 1968. The mayor has a term of office of three years, up to and including the next mayor's term, and the city has a mayor-elect for a third term in 2014. The last mayor to serve a full term in office was John Johnson.

The district has since expanded to include the towns of Norway and Lakeview. It also includes the Town of Lakes, which opened in 1881. The school district was founded by the town's first residents, in 1879. The town's name means "lake" or "land" in the local language, and it is used to refer to Lake Lakes, a small lake in the north of the district, and to Lakes Lake, a large lake to the south of the town. The name of the school district is "Wels School," which was established in 1882. The first school was built in 1883. The current school is called "Lakeview Elementary" and is located in Lakeview, in the town of Norway. The elementary school is one of three in the district.
